The sleek, aerodynamic wind turbines at kilronan are a stark contrast to traditional coal generation, which uses precious and finite fossil fuel resources and generates heat, smoke and ash as unwanted by-products.

Emissions released to the environment from Arigna's coal powered station included carbon dioxide and oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. During it's first year of operation the kilronan wind farm avoided the emission of 12,659,000 kg's of carbon dioxide, which is the main greenhouse gas implicated in global climate change.

It also displaced the emission of smaller amounts of sulphur and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to acid rain.
