Kilronan Wind Farm is situated in the Kilronan Mountains close to Derrinavoggy in County Roscommon on a plateau 320 metres above sea level, exposed to Ireland's prevailing south westerly winds.

The excellent wind resource, together with existing access roads and power lines to the coal mines, which were running just a couple of hundred metres from the site, made Kilronan the ideal location for a wind farm.

Accurate wind speed measurements were recorded at the site for a period of more than a year. On the basis of positive results, construction of the wind farm commenced in August 1997 and was fully complete in just 4 months.

Visitors to the site to date have included schools, Planners (Irish Potential Developers), local authority planners (Irish Planning Institute), overseas visitors and casual visitors.
